This May – during Africa Month – MultiChoice will launch the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) – an Africa-wide, multi-tiered educational and experiential-learning programme designed to provide the African creative industry with a platform to learn, develop their talent, engage and connect with each other’s through their shared passions

 

Through the MTF, MultiChoice Africa will develop emerging TV and film talent whilst simultaneously promoting the growth of local content in key markets through a well-structured and impactful social investment programme

 

The MultiChoice Talent Factory brand will be delivered through three (3) touchpoints:

 

  1. The MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy; an educational programme aimed at furnishing 60 deserving young, talented people who want to work — and innovate — in film and television production through skills development in accredited MTF Academies based in Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia.

 

  1. The MultiChoice Talent Factory Portal: A Pan-African, film industry online destination for information about the creative industry, including contacts and thought leadership. The portal offers open access to film creatives across Africa to showcase their talent, access opportunities, stay up to date with industry news and expand their industry network.

 

  1. The MultiChoice Talent Factory Masterclasses: industry “BEST IN CLASS” workshops that will increase our educational outreach too established film and TV professionals. The Masterclasses are aimed at developingtechnical skills of established creatives in cinematography, audio and storytelling to improve the quality of local productions.

 

Working in partnership with local creative organisations across the continent, we will use our people, facilities and network to provide a select group of young people with a tailored 12-month apprenticeship, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications to help launch a successful career within the creative industry.

Together with our channels, namely: Africa Magic, Maisha Magic Bongo, Maisha Magic East, Zambezi Magic, M-Net and SuperSport we will ensure that this programme delivers benefits and value for not only the participants but also our business partners, regulatory and government stakeholders as well as our customers who will have access to the content created through this pipeline on our DStv and GOtv platforms

More about the MTF Academy

As MultiChoice, we recognise there’s untapped talent that lack resources to develop their talent in order to contribute to the growth and future of Africa’s film and television industry

 

We also recognise and uphold excellence in the film and TV arts and believe that supporting this young emerging talent, will open the industry to more innovation

 

The MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy is aimed at supporting and encouraging excellence in filmmaking at the post school education level.

 

Each regional Academy will feature 20 student candidates each, and will be led by a well-respected, local industry expert in partnership with recognised institutions to ensure credibility and professional qualification (local accreditation) which will culminate in the students’ graduation

The curriculum – currently under development – will bbuild the theoretical understanding of production skills and management combined with practical experience (on-the-job learning). Studentswill have access to project driven, hands-on experiences to gain more knowledge and skills in film and TV.

The MTF Academy among industry will partner with local channels, studios and content providers to directly impact the career development of the students.

 

As the MTF Academy program moves forward, MultiChoice is working to strategically expand partnerships in the programme and build on the successes of its first pilot year.

 

The 12-month programme will culminate in the production of local content by the students for broadcast on local channels.

More about The MTF Masterclasses:

The MTF Masterclasses will offer exclusive access to industry professionals.

 

Positioned as “best in class”, the workshops will feature industry experts-led skills workshops, that will afford film and television professional the ability to interact and learn from the best.

 

This initiative will ultimately cement, strengthen and clarify long-standing, but independent efforts to address concerns of accessibility and opportunity for underrepresented communities on our DStv and GOtv platforms.

 

The MTF Masterclasses will leverage the expertise of MTF Academy Directors, MultiChoice employees and local and international industry experts

 

These workshops will be conducted by industry experts including producers, scriptwriters, directors, audio experts, etc. to provide hands-on practical training in the fields of cinematography, audio and storytelling.

More About the MultiChoice Talent Factory Portal:

The online portal will provide a one-stop shop for information about the African Film and Television industry

 

Leverage online traffic created from a high profile launch, a portal will be launched to start building an industry database

 

The database will be a profiling tool for the African continent’s film industry talent – bringing talent and opportunities together in one place

 

This database will also provide insight into what the footprint of talent is across the MultiChoice regions.

 

At launch – on 30between 23 and4 May – the portal will go live with the Call to Entry for the MTF Academies and serve as platform for prospective students to apply

 

Soon after, the portal will be launched as a fully-fledged home of Africa’s Creative Industry network

 

The portal will include a Linked-In-style networking section for the industry to sign up and position themselves so they are visible across the continent and globally while showcasing their work portfolio

What is the MultiChoice Talent Factory?

When Do the entries for the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy open?
The Call Entries will go live on 30 May until 05 July 2018. The MTF Academies will commence training from 01 October 2018.

When does the MTF portal launch?
The first phase of the portal will launch on the 30 May 2018 with the Call to Entry. The second phase will roll out later in the year.

I’m already a skilled creative in the industry – what do I have to gain out of this?
Professionals who are already part of the industry will have an opportunity to hone their skills through the MTF Masterclasses which will feature ‘best in class’ workshops on various topics in the filmmaking process. The Masterclasses are aimed at developingtechnical skills in camera and lighting, audio and storytelling of established creatives to improve the quality of local productions.

What is MultiChoice hoping to get out of this project?
The MTF initiative will not only help to grow Africa’s creative industry but will also result in more talented and skilled creative individuals entering the industry, thereby creating a pipeline for exciting and fresh local, home-grown content for our valued DStv and GOtv customers.
